Orakei Marae

History

Ngati Whatua o Orakei are a hapu, of the Ngati Whatua iwi (tribe) based in New Zealand’s largest city, Tamaki Makaurau, commonly known as Auckland. Today, we number over 5,000 people who are scattered throughout the world, however our home-fires are centred around the Orakei Marae, a mere 10 minutes from the central business district of Auckland.

Ngati Whatua’s occupation in Tamaki Makaurau began in the 17th century when Te Taou, a hapu of Ngati Whatua campaigned against Waiohua, the former proprietors of Tamaki Makaurau.
This was under the principal leadership of Tuperiri. Tuperiri remained, consolidating Ngati Whatua in Tamaki Makaurau.

As such, every member of Ngati Whatua o Orakei can trace their whakapapa to Tuperiri and are descended from the 3 hapu: Te Taou, Ngaoho and Te Uringutu, collectively referred to as Ngati Whatua o Orakei. Today, the collective affairs are looked after by the Ngati Whatua o Orakei Maori Trust Board.
