The Education Hui was held on Anzac weekend, 23-24 April with the primary purpose of celebration. On the Saturday a series of workshops were held for our tamariki, rangatahi and pakeke.

The tamariki and rangatahi were involved and entertained in a series of activities throughout the day. This was made possible with the support of the Auckland City Police, Orakei Watersports and MaiFM.

The focus for the Police was to introduce themselves and their work to our tamariki and whanau. As 3 year old Atakura Hunia alluded ‘they’re not naughty, nga pirihimana, they’re nice’. The highlight for many of our tamariki was the lucky 3 who were selected to take a ride on the police helicopter over the Waitemata and whenua rangatira. The recruitment team was also there and left with three of their newest recruits.

MaiFM joined in the festivities gi ving away prizes and broadcasting some of the fun live over the airwaves. Orakei Watersports was also there creating ‘korowai’ using some the materials found from the whenua rangatira and our moana.

At the same time, the pakeke were in the whare tupuna, Tumutumuwhenua, engaged in a series of workshops lead by Sir Hugh Kawharu, Tiaki Hunia , Precious Clark e and Wayne Pihema . The topics ranged from the Treaty of Waitangi, dimensions of rangatiratanga, leadership, tourism development and hapu education. Importantly, it was also an opportunity for our graduates to give back and lead initiatives such as this.

The hui culminated with Sunday which saw around 300 people at Orakei Marae gather to enjoy the festivities - acknowledgement of our hapu achievers and their whanau, and the distribution of resources.
