Kip McGrath is a national provider of education support for children experiencing difficulty with school work, needing extra help in a particular subject area of those who would like extension work.

It is not intended that Kip McGrath replace the work of the school, rathe it is intended that they build on the work within the schools, developing individual programmes and monitoring homework with the aim of raising student achievement.

Kip McGrath offers services in over 100 centres across New Zealand, making it accessible for a large number of NWO beneficiaries.

In the past, Ngati Whatua o Orakei Maori Trust Board (NWOMTB) has subsidised Kip McGrath literacy and numeracy tuition for Year 8 and 9 NWO students. Kip McGrath tuition has proven successful for students who participated with noticeable improvements in performance, and increased confidence in their school work.

Because of the success of the Kip McGrath programme the NWOMTB is offering 15 weeks of subsidised training for NWO beneficiaries from Year 1 - 13. NWOMTB will subsidise two thirds of the child's tuition fees, parents are required to pay the remaining third.

This year the Kip McGrath programme will commence after the acceptance of your application form and once your nominated centre has contacted you to arrange your initial assessment. Parents are required to complete and return the attached subsidy application form. Upon acceptance into the programme the process will operate as follows:

  1. ASSESSMENT - Your nominated centre will be contacted advising them of our subsidy scheme and asking them to contact you to make an appointment for your child's assessment. Your child will do an assessment and from that, an individual programme tailored to their needs will be created by Kip McGrath.
  2. INDIVIDUAL PROGRAMMES - The child will attend one of the centres across New Zealand once a week working in groups of up to five children for an 80-minute lesson. All materials will be provided to the child.
  3. MONITORED HOMEWORK - A limited amount of homework is set to reinforce or extend the work undertaken.
  4. ASSESSMENT - Progress is monitored by the centre staff and at the completion of their programme progress will be reported to the child, their parent and Ngati Whatua o Orakei Education Department.
  5. EVALUATION - The child will be required to fill out an evaluation form relating to their experiences of participating in the programme.

You will be contacted by the director of Kip McGrath within 10 working days of receiving your application form. The initial assessment will be delivered at the Kip McGrath centre of your choice, at a time arranged between you and the director.

Payments

Parents will be expected to make a weekly contribution towards their child's fee. This amount is to be paid directly to your Kip McGrath centre each week in advance. Any payment enquiries relating to the parents contribution should be discussed with the centre Accounts Administrator. At the end of the 15 week period, and upon receiving a progress report from the centre, Ngati Whatua o Orakei will pay the remainder of the child's fees.

In 2012, Ngati Whatua o Orakei is committed to offering $30 per week towards each child's Kip McGrath fees. This means parents will be required to pay between $14-$19 per week for their child's lessons. Parent contribution will be dictated by the fees set by each centre. Please check the rate with your centre when they call to book your free assessment.

Extension

If your child has been attending Kip McGrath tutorials regularly, have received a favourable report from Kip McGrath, and parents or whanau have paid their fees on time, Ngati Whatua o Orakei will offer students an additional five weeks of the subsidy. This mans a total of 20 weeks (or two terms) worth of subsidised tuition is available.

Extensions will be offered only to those students who satisfy the above criteria and who are committed to attending tuition for a further five weeks. A written invitation to continue with tuition will be sent to those students who meet the extension criteria. If no written invitation is given, and students remain at Kip McGrath, the full tuition cost (after the first 15 weeks) must be made by the parent.
