About Us

This is us. At our 2008 Education Hui at Orakei marae. Building our future.
Ngati Whatua’s occupation in Tamaki Makaurau began in the 17th century when Te Taou, a hapu (sub-tribe) of Ngati Whatua campaigned against Waiohua, the former proprietors of Tamaki Makaurau.
This was under the principal leadership of Tuperiri. Tuperiri remained, consolidating Ngati Whatua in Tamaki Makaurau.
As such, every member of Ngati Whatua o Orakei can trace their whakapapa (genealogy) to Tuperiri and are descended from the 3 hapu (sub-tribes): Te Taou, Ngaoho and Te Uringutu, collectively referred to as Ngati Whatua o Orakei.
Today, the collective affairs of the sub-tribe are looked after by the Ngati Whatua o Orakei Maori Trust Board.
