On 25 May 1978, more than 700 police, army and navy persnnel were ordered to break up the Bastion Point protest. The removal resulted in more than 200 arrests.

On Sunday 25 May 2008, a ceremony of remembrance and reconciliation was observed at Orakei Marae.

Alec Hawke says "This weekend is an opportunity to thank those thousands of people and hundreds of commmunities around the country that gave us support."
