Nga Rongoa o Te Hunga Kaumatua: The Ngati Whatua o Orakei Maori Trust Board Kaumatua Prescriptions Programme

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What is the purpose of the “Nga Rongoa o te Hunga Kaumatua (Kaumatua Prescriptions) Programme” (the “Programme”)?

It is generally accepted that there is an association between greater use of health services and medication, and old age.  The purpose of the Programme is to provide financial relief to our eligible kaumatua for the cost of their prescriptions.

Q2: Who is eligible for the Programme?

To be eligible for the Programme, a person must meet the following criteria:
  1. Have his or her name recorded on the Ngati Whatua o Orakei Beneficiary Register;
  2. Have attained his or her 60th birthday; and
  3. Reside in Aotearoa/New Zealand for 183 days in any 12 month period.
If you are unsure of whether you are eligible, feel free to contact the Trust Board’s Corporate Office using the details provided at the end of these frequently asked questions.

Q3: What types of medicines will I be able to apply to have the Trust Board cover the cost of?

Only medicines that are prescribed by a Medical Doctor or Nurse (or any person authorised by law to prescribe medicines) will be eligible for reimbursement.

Q4: How do I get a reimbursement if I am eligible?

If you are eligible you will automatically be added to the list of eligible kaumatua. The kaumatua list will be updated monthly to include kaumatua who meet the eligibility criteria (for example where a person turns 60).

To receive a reimbursement for the cost of your prescription medicines, eligible kaumatua will need to:
  1. Complete the Trust Board Kaumatua Prescriptions Refund Form (visit the Trust Board website to download it, or contact the Trust Board on the details below).
  2. Supply the Trust Board with an original pre-printed bank deposit slip that records the kaumatua’s name and bank account details (you do not have to supply another one after your first claim is made unless your bank account details change);
  3. Attach to the Kaumatua Prescriptions Refund Form an original prescription receipt for each medicine that records:
    • The name of the kaumatua
    • The medicine(s) supplied
    • That medicine is a prescription medicine
    • The cost of the medicine.

To assist kaumatua to send in the required documentation (above), the Trust Board has set up a free post service. When sending in the required documentation to the Trust Board, a kaumatua should print the following information on the front of a standard size envelope and put it in a New Zealand Post post office box:

Free Post: Ngati Whatua o Orakei
Prescriptions Programme
Ngati Whatua o Orakei Maori Trust Board
PO Box 42 045
Orakei
Auckland

Once the Trust Board receives the completed documentation described above from a kaumatua, the Trust Board will pay refunds to the kaumatua’s nominated bank account. Payment will be made on or around the 20th of the month following the Trust Board’s receipt of the claim.

Q5: What about if I am on the Eastridge Pharmacy Kaumatua List and I get my prescriptions medicines from that Pharmacy? Do I also need to provide the Trust Board with a prescription receipt?

If you are on the Eastridge Pharmacy Kaumatua List you do not need to do anything. You will still be able to go to the Eastridge Shopping Centre Pharmacy and get your prescription medicines without charge.

There will be no need to provide the Trust Board with a prescription receipt.

Q6: When will the Programme commence?

The Programme will commence on 15 September 2010. So, from 15 September eligible kaumatua will be able to have the cost of their prescription medicines covered by the Trust Board.
