The Beneficiary Register
In 1978, the Trust Board was charged with determining the beneficiaries of the hapu as those being descendants of the common ancestor, Tuperiri.
The Trust Board compiled a list for the Maori Land Court giving people opportunity to lodge objections. The Maori Land Court had jurisdiction to hear and determine all objections after which, the Court issued a final list of the descendants of Tuperiri.
This final list was ratified by the 1978 Orakei Block (Vesting and Use) Act.
This list of beneficiaries was subsequently ratified by the Orakei Act 1991.
An important function of the Trust Board is to maintain a roll of beneficiaries. And to enable qualified Ngati Whatua to enrol as a beneficiary.
The Orakei Act 1991 provides for any descendant of Tuperiri to apply in writing for registration as a beneficiary of the Trust Board.
The Act states you will receive a reply in writing. If your application is rejected, you have the right to apply to the Maori Land Court for inclusion on the beneficiary roll.
