Why A Post Settlement Governance Entity (PSGE) is Necessary

Ratification_PSGE_Doc_3Before Ngati Whatua o Orakei can receive settlement assets from the Crown, a PSGE must be established and ratified.

Existing Maori Trust Boards are not regarded by the Crown as being suitable to become PSGEs because they are ultimately responsible to the Minister of Maori Affairs rather than the iwi or hapu. Your negotiating team assess the options and is satisfied a new PSGE format would be better for the hapu.

The new PSGE, named Ngati Whatua Orakei Trust will receive and hold the settlement assets, manage the settlement assets and distribute the benefits derived from settlement.

You can download a document which explains the PSGE here.

This will also be explained at Ratification Hui around New Zealand and Australia. Download a schedule of venues dates and times here.

Ratification Hui

The Ngāti Whātua o Ōrākei Māori Trust Board is holding a series of ratification hui to give you the opportunity to raise questions and discuss any issues to assist you in making your final decisions. The ratification hui will be held at a number of locations in New Zealand and Australia during October 2011 (see below, full details available soon).

An overview of the settlement offer and the Post Settlement Governance Entity (PSGE) will be provided at the ratification hui. Given the importance of this settlement, the Trust Board encourages you to attend at least one ratification hui, if you are able, before submitting your vote.

All ratification hui will be publicly notified in relevant daily newspapers. No resolutions will be sought at the hui but anyone who wishes to post a vote may do so in accordance with the voting procedures set out below. You can download and print out a pdf of the ratification hui venues, dates and times here.

Te Puni Kōkiri officials will attend the ratification hui as independent observers.
